Introduction
"Pastor Al" graduated from high school in 1943 and immediately went in the U. S. Navy. He trained as a hospital corpsman and served one year at the Naval Hospital and Air Station in Beaufort, S. C. Since Marine Corps medics are drawn from the Navy, Al was soon assigned to the 1st Division, 5th Marines. During the Okinawa campaign, his unit received the Presidential Citation for extraordinary heroism in the final months of World War II. Prior to honorable discharge, he served with the occupational forces in China.
At the King's College, Al met his future wife, Olive. Both of them graduated from Wheaton College in 1950, "Ollie" with a degree in Elemenatry Education and Al in Business and Economics. Four months later they were married.
Al's business career started with Blue Cross of New York. He became a Regional Sales Manager with Westinghouse, and then worked for Home Life Insurance for three years, where he was recognized as "Man of the Year" in 1958. The following year Al entered Divinity School.
His pastoral experiences include three years as youth pastor before his senior pastorates. He was then invited to become Director of Development at Trinity College and Divinity School and spent nearly twenty years in that position. Upon retiring, Al was called into five interim pastorates, concluding with ten years in pastoral care at Trinity Evangelical Free Church of Eustis, Florida.
It was one of Al's associates, the late Dr. Warren Benson, vice president of Trinity, who first urged Al to consider writing a book. He once described Al's work as "gluing together broken churches." Al's insight into the many issues of pastoral ministry become manifest in some of the chapter themes in his book, Human Nature in the Kingdom of God (SPS Publications). Some of the chapter titles are: Fear, the Faith Killer, Suffering and Pain: What Does it Mean and How Can God Use It?, There's More to the Grapefruit than Meets the Eye, Caution: Danger Ahead, and Finishing Well.
